What does SEER mean?

February 28th, 2011

How does a SEER rating impact your decision when buying an air conditioner in Chicago?

All central air conditioning systems have a SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) rating that is regulated by the U.S. Department of Energy. Currently, no air conditioning system can have a SEER rating lower than 13. In Chicago, air conditioning systems can range anywhere from 13 SEER to 20 SEER.
Let’s take the mystery out of this whole SEER thing by comparing it to something we all can understand; miles per gallon. Think of higher SEER ratings as higher MPG in your car. Some cars get 10 miles per gallon and others can get 30 miles per gallon and more. Most consumers would choose the higher MPG as it going to end up saving them more money over time even though it may cost a little more money in the beginning.
Purchasing a new air conditioning system with a higher SEER rating can also create a significant savings on your monthly electric bill particularly here in the Chicago area where our energy rates are fairly high.
Most air conditioning systems installed in the Chicago area prior to 1995 are 8 SEER or lower. The installation of a system with the minimum (currently) of 13 SEER will reduce your energy consumption by approximately 38%. That can make a huge difference on your electric bill especially in Chicago where we pay some of the highest rates in the country.
In general, Chicago air conditioning systems do not operate as much as in other parts of the country where the climate is warmer. According to ASHRAE (the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Engineers), Chicago air conditioners operate an average of 800 hours per year. Last summer (2010) most of the air conditioning installations we provided to our customers were fairly evenly divided between 13 and 16 SEER.
What is the difference between 13 SEER and 16 SEER? As mentioned earlier, a typical 13 SEER air conditioner installation will improve efficiency by approximately 38% and that is significant even in Chicago where our usage is not as great as other parts of the country. That said, a 16 SEER air conditioner installation can improve efficiency by up to 50% over typical older 8 SEER systems found in the Chicago area.
So if you are planning on having an air conditioning estimate remember to factor in the cost savings of a unit with a higher SEER rating. While you may spend a little more money up front for a high efficiency air conditioner, you will more than likely make up and even exceed the extra cost in just a few short years.

Advice on replacing your Chicago furnace

December 22nd, 2011

All Temp knows furnaces. Chicago has turned to All Temp for products, service and advice since 1938. Here’s what they have to say about furnaces…

Replacing your aging Chicago furnace with a new, efficient model will reduce your monthly energy prices, run cleaner, and increase home comfort by producing a more steady flow of heat. Also make sure you get the right size furnace for your home. A furnace that is too large will cycle on and off more frequently, creating unnecessary wear and tear on its components, as well as wasting energy. At All Temp, we make sure to sell and install the correct size furnace, calculating your heating needs. Often this means surveying your house, its size, the locations of rooms where you eat, sleep and congregate. Gas is the most common heating fuel used by Chicago homes and those who live in Chicago’s suburbs, and most central-heating systems operate on gas. To best understand the concept of “high efficiency,” you need to know that efficiently is calculated how a furnace converts gas into heating energy, which is expressed as AFUE—an annual fuel-utilization-efficiency rating. The higher the AFUE percentage (number), the more heat is generated from each therm of gas.
A gas furnace from the early 1970s might have an AFUE of about 65 percent. Today, the absolute lowest efficiency allowed by law for new gas furnaces is 78 percent, which shows you how far heating technology has come. Certain new models today achieve 97 percent—near-total efficiency.

All Temp Chicagoland Heating and Air Conditioning not only helps homeowners select the proper equipment for their dwelling, but also offers numerous, money-saving advantages. As one of the largest Bryant dealerships in the country, All Temp has tremendous buying power, and passes savings on to the customer. Even more important, All Temp stands behind its products and services, and offers industry-leading manufacturer warranties.

Smart Chicago Homeowners trade in money-eating furnaces

December 5th, 2011

You like keeping your Chicago home warm during winter. Who doesn’t want to be comfortable? But if your furnace is over 10 years old, you are spending more on your utility bill than you should. Month after month. The reason is simple. Years ago we didn’t have the technology to make high-efficiency furnaces. Utility prices were lower too. Today high efficiency Bryant furnaces from All Temp run better, smoother, quieter and more efficiently. In fact, over time, these new hybrid furnaces pay for themselves in utility bill savings. Think of it like that car you owned many years ago. It guzzled gas like a monster, but it wasn’t such a big deal when gasoline was only $1.50 a gallon. So getting 12 miles a gallon wasn’t a big deal. Now it is. The same for your money-eating Chicago furnace. So if it is approaching old age, it may be time for retirement. All Temp offers you a variety of Bryant high-efficiency models to choose from, at surprisingly affordable prices. Call and arrange a free in-home estimate.

November 15th, 2011

The AccuWeather.com Long-Range Forecasting Team has Chicago right in the middle of where the worst of winter 2011-2012′s snow and cold is expected to be.
“Last winter was nasty in Chicago. This winter could be just as bad,” warned AccuWeather.com Expert Long-Range Meteorologist Bob Smerbeck. This will make it the fifth winter in a row with snowfall well above normal and temperatures well below average for the city. The last time there were this many back-to-back winters with snowfall well above normal was in the 1970s.

Hey, Chicagoland, reset your automatic thermostat!

November 15th, 2011

Now that Daylight Saving Time has arrived, remember to adjust your automatic thermostat to keep your Chicago home warm and comfy this winter. We actually lose as much as four and a half hours of daylight from summer’s late sunsets to winter’s early dusk. Most of us who return home from work will be doing so in pitch darkness. Make sure your home furnace anticipates your arrival. Set your automatic thermostat to begin warming your home a few degrees more starting at about 4:30 to 5:00pm. You may want to raise the temp a few degrees more during the dinner and evening hours, especially if the outside temp is extremely cold. And hour before you head off to bed, set your automatic thermostat to lower the temp to around 66-degrees, or the sleeping temperature you desire. If it seems a bit too cool remember, it’s healthier for your body and you’ll be saving energy costs when the furnace isn’t working hard at night. Besides, that’s why they make blankets. Most people like to have their house (in winter) a bit warmer when they wake up. Unless you are planning on staying in all day, only raise the temp a degree or two–or not at all. There is no reasons to warm an empty home if you’re heading off to work. Your automatic thermostat is your friend. Adjust it for your comfort and maximum energy savings. Winter-like temperatures in Chicago can last well into March, even April. Also, since your furnace is running often during the colder months, check your filters more often. Nothing prevents your furnace from working harder than it should than having a dirty filter. And for goodness sake, if you haven’t had a furnace Clean & Check for winter, call All Temp today. You’ll save $40 too, for a limited time. Our Clean & Check is now only $89.95. Enjoy a warm, cozy winter. We promise, Spring will return.

CHICAGO BRACES FOR COLD, SNOWY WINTER. Is Your Home Heating Ready?

October 6th, 2011

My, my, my, how our Chicago TV weatherman love to predict terrible weather ahead. Here we are in October and they are already forecasting frigid temps and tons of snow for winter 2011-12. Thanks goodness for companies like All Temp. We can’t do anything about the outside world, but we can make sure you are warm and comfy inside your home. There are certain things, though, that you are required to do. First, get a Pre-Winter Furnace Clean & Check. For only $89.95 (Regularly $129.95) All Temp will perform a complete, multi-point inspection, tuneup, cleaning and calibration of your furnace or boiler. It’s really important because the last thing you want is a breakdown when it’s zero degrees. Not only will you freeze your toes, you risk bursting water pipes and other potential hazards. $89.95 is a small price to pay for peace of mind. Homeowners in Chicago and throughout the suburban area should also assess the age and condition of their furnace or boiler. If it is nearing 10 years or older, chances are it doesn’t have a long life ahead. More importantly, your Chicago furnace is guzzling gas and costing you way more than it should…month after month after month. Today’s new Bryant high-efficiency furnaces operate more efficiently and use less energy than your older furnace. Fact is, in a short time, the money you save greatly reduces your overall cost for a new Bryant Furnace. For nearly 75 winters, All Temp Chicagoland Heating and Air Conditioning Company has been keeping families warm and worry-free. For a free in-home estimate, call 1-800-All Temp. And turn off the Weather Channel. Your in good hands.
